What is DNA Molecular Weight?

The molecular weight (MW) of DNA is calculated by summing the molecular weights of each deoxyribonucleotide residue in the sequence. It is essential for DNA quantification and molar concentration calculations.

How It Works

  • The tool sums the residue molecular weight of each deoxyribonucleotide in the sequence and applies a terminal group correction.
  • Nucleotide residue weights: dAMP = 313.21, dTMP = 304.19, dCMP = 289.18, dGMP = 329.21
  • For double-stranded DNA, the molecular weight of the complementary strand (A↔T, G↔C) is also calculated and added.
  • For circular DNA, the ends are joined by a phosphodiester bond, releasing one water molecule and reducing the MW by approximately 18 Da (or ~36 Da for dsDNA) compared to linear DNA.
  • When ambiguity codes (R, Y, M, K, S, W, B, D, H, V, N) are present, the molecular weight is displayed as a range (min ~ max).

Description

  • Accepted characters: A, T, G, C and IUPAC ambiguity codes (R, Y, M, K, S, W, B, D, H, V, N).
  • Both uppercase and lowercase letters are accepted.
  • Numbers, spaces, and line breaks are automatically ignored.
